Anyone who walked through the SURC around 7 p.m. last night (or noon, for that matter), likely noticed a very unusual-looking rock and roll group. Raining Jane is not your typical band, and what makes them unique is also what caught my eye. A long-necked string instrument that only vaguely resembles a lute is not a typical instrument in western music.
That instrument is called a sitar. It’s a classic Indian instrument, and it’s twangy tone is very characteristic of Indian music tradition.
Who’d have thought such an instrument could actually sound good with rock guitar?
And if you weren’t there, check out Raining Jane on the web. In the mean time, here’s hoping it won’t take four years for them to visit again!
