The Wilderness Medical Training Center and Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR) presents a rigorous Wilderness First Responder Certification course available to the general public, including those living outside of Ellensburg. This course is split into two parts, the first includes online study sessions followed by weekly tests participants must pass in order to move on to part two of the course. These lessons include how to deal with emergency situations such as splinting a broken femur or broken arm, dealing with head injuries, and more. Participant must complete the online sessions before part two of the program begins.
Part two of the program includes a five-day hands on training course from Monday, June 16th to Friday, June 20th from 9am to 5pm every day. This portion of the training will include teaching students how to deal with potential hazards that may occur in the wilderness. Participants will earn their Wilderness First Responder certification upon completion of both parts of the course. Recreation majors may earn a practicum credit through this course.
Pre-registration is required by Friday, May 2nd and the cost is $579 for CWU students, $589 for faculty and staff and $599 for the public. The fee covers all instructional materials, course supplies and certification upon completion of course requirements.
