Excuse the mess: CWU Student Union & Recreation Center remodel underway

The CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) is remodeling various sections of the building during a two-phase process. Updates include changes to the Information Center and Recreation front desk to allow for better traffic flow and improved access, in addition to new carpeting and flooring throughout the building. During the project, staff will work to minimize the impact to the daily building operations by posting directional signage for construction detour routes.

Student Union:
Phase 1 will take place from July 30 through Aug. 22; areas affected include the Market Place Dining area, Cat Trax East Coffee Shop, the second floor mezzanine and back hallway (behind the Ballroom and Theatre). During this phase, new carpet will be installed under the dining tables and VCT, a vinyl composition flooring tile, will go in the walkways and coffee shop, and a luxury vinyl wood-looking flooring will go on the mezzanine. The back hallway will receive Mondo flooring to help reduce noise levels.

Phase 2 will begin Aug. 25 and run through Sept. 12. VCT flooring will be placed on the first floor corridor and new carpet will go in the second floor administration offices hallway.

For the duration of the project, operation of the Information Center and laptop checkout services will be temporarily relocated and available through the Student Union Operations office in SURC 146. The newly renovated Information Center will feature a walk through computer station with three walk-up computers, one that is ADA compatible. Two existing printers will be moved to the new location for students to conveniently print and pick up documents. The area will feature all new cabinets and counter tops, as well as wall-mounted SURC mailboxes for easy pick-up access.

Recreation Center:
Phase 1 will be from July 30 through Aug. 21 and Phase 2 will go from Aug. 22 through Sept. 16. Over the course of both phases, the front desk will be redesigned with new turnstiles at the entrance. A new Climbing Wall/Weight Room desk and flooring will be installed, and the Weight Room will gain 85 square feet and a relocated entrance.

The Weight Room, Climbing Wall and the front entrance of Recreation Center will be closed for the entire project; however, alternate routes to enter the facility will be posted. The entrance and the membership desk will be temporarily located on the east side of the Recreation Center, across from Barto Hall, for Phase 1 and on the SURC second floor mezzanine for parts of Phase 2. Select weight room equipment will be relocated upstairs and group training equipment will be removed from room 284 and reset in the cardio area. Cardio equipment will be placed in both group fitness rooms.

In addition, the hallway along the basketball courts will receive new flooring from the gates to the elevator during Phase 1, and from the elevator to the end of the hallway during Phase 2. The basketball courts will be closed for repair, paint and refinish during Phase 2. The locker rooms will also be closed for a short time during this period.
