5 Rocky Horror Picture Show Costumes

Written by Emma CrowE

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has a long and vibrant history. Check out this blog post to learn more!

One of the best parts about going to the show in person is dressing up. But then the question becomes, what costume should you wear?

There are several characters with unique fashion styles on the show, but the top 5 are listed below.

1 – Dr. Frank-N-Furter (the mastermind himself)

Dr. Frank-N-Furter is the reason we have the Rocky Horror Picture Show. He may also be the character you see on posters for the show. Here’s what you’re going to need if you want to impersonate this mad scientist:

  • Curly brown wig
  • White foundation, blue eyeshadow, eyeliner, and dark red lipstick
  • Pearl necklace
  • Black corset
  • Black women’s underwear
  • Black garter belt
  • Fishnet stockings
  • High heels

2 – Magenta (everyone’s fav maid)

Magenta is easily recognizable due to her costume. She wears a maid costume for the entirety of the show. Here’s how to recreate Magenta’s costume:

  • Curly red wig
  • Black heels
  • Black stockings
  • Black dress
  • White apron

3 – Janet Weiss (our leading lady)

Janet Weiss (pre-Dr.Frank-N-Furter) is the character to dress up as if you’re nervous to dress up. Janet’s costume could be as simple as:

  • Pink dress
  • White sweater
  • And some heels

4 – Brad Majors (our leading lady’s man)

Brad Majors is Janet’s fiancé and one of the characters the show follows. Brad is the perfect character to dress up as if your friends are dragging you to the show against your will. You may already have all you need in your closet.

  • Eyeglasses
  • Light blue button up
  • Blue v-neck sweater
  • Tan jacket
  • Gray pants
  • Brown loafers

5 – Rocky (the “monster”)

Rocky. The star of the show. (Literally, his name is in the title) If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can dress up as Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s creation. For most of the show, Rocky just wears a pair of tiny gold shorts. In a different scene, he wears an orange bedsheet. As you’d imagine, the list of things to create a Rocky costume is rather small.

  • Small gold shorts
  • Shoes painted gold
  • Orange sheet
  • Glitter (optional, but always welcome)

You can always make these costumes your own with additional glitter, sequins, or whatever your heart desires. (Personally, I will be wearing a very large hoodie over my costume, but to each their own)

See you at McConnell Auditorium at 10 p.m. on October 29! Be one of the first 500 audience members in order to snag a goodie bag.
